April 1, 1634
A group of freeman descend on Gov. John Winthrop’s house and demand to see the Massachusetts Bay Colony charter. They then discover that it says, “henceforth forever there shall be one Governor, one Deputy Governor, and 18 Assistants of the same Company to be from time to time constituted, elected and chosen out of the Freemen of the said Company. . .” According to Cornelius Dalton, they also discover, “that all laws were to be made by the General Court, consisting of the freemen as well as the assistants.” In an understated description of the situation, Winthrop writes, “the people began to grow uneasy.”
