William Stoughton is appointed acting royal governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

[1692-Dath] The colony’s lieutenant governor, Stoughton, a resident of Dorchester, had been a judge in the Salem witchcraft trials, and also serves as Chief Justice as well as governor. He manages to neither antagonize the Crown nor the Old Charter supporters and serves as governor until 1698.*
