William Dummer is appointed acting royal governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

January 1, 1723

The move occurs after Gov. Samuel Shute, tired of the constantly wrangling with the colony’s residents, secretly boards a ship and sails for England to defend himself against misconduct charges against him brought by the General Court and Boston Town Meeting. Elisha Cooke Jr. goes to England to press those charges, but is unsuccessful, putting an end to what could have been the rebellion of 1724. Shute, however, never returns to Boston and Dummer serves until 1728.*
