West End urban renewal plan public hearing is held.

November 16, 1957

Some 200 people attend the first hearing held on the plan by the Boston Redevelopment Authority at the West End Branch Library. During the hearing, state representatives Charles Capraro and Christopher Ianella question the wisdom of the plan. School Committee member Joseph Lee Jr. calls it “[A] land grab because of the cultural and geographic advantages of this area.” Outside, picketers carry signs reading “Don’t Give the West End to Rappaport.”
