West End Railway Central Power Station is built.

Architect: William Preston. [Pearson, Frederick S.-Seasholes] It is located at 540 Harrison Avenue. Described at the time as “the largest electric powerhouse in the world,” its 250-foot smokestack is 30 feet taller than the Bunker Hill Monument. The plant begins operation in 1896, and is subsequently transferred to the Boston Elevated Railroad Company. It ceases operation on February 26, 1930, is closed on July 1, 1932, and demolished in 1941.
