Wessagusset Massacre takes place in today’s Weymouth.
March 25, 1623
Seven member of the Massachuset tribe, including war chief Wituwamat, are killed in an attack led by Myles Standish. The raid takes place after Massasoit (Ousamequin) disclosed that some Native Americans were planning to wipe out that settlement and the one at New Plymouth. Standish cuts off Wituwamat’s head and brings it back to New Plymouth, where it is placed on a pole outside the stockade fence and remains there, rotting, for years. After the clash, settlers abandon Wessagussett, with some moving to Plymouth, some to Maine, and some returning to England.
