Tom Menino becomes the longest serving mayor in Boston history.
July 12, 2009
Menino has served 5,846 days, one more than Kevin White and 43 more than James Michael Curley (if the period from June 26, 1947 to November 28, 1947 when Curley was in jail for mail fraud is counted). In the next day’s Boston Globe, historian Thomas H. O’Connor writes, “He gave these beaten-down people what they wanted and what they wanted was normalcy, was peace and quiet and ordinariness. This is what he gave them and I think this is what he is still giving them.”
