Thomas Handasyd Perkins dies in Boston.
January 11, 1854
[1/16] Perkins dies at his home on Temple Place. In one account, when asked a few days before his death whether he thought he might go to Heaven, Perkins replies, “I’m about as good as Gus Thorndike, Jim Otis or Charlie Hammond and almost as good as Frank Codman. I shall go where they go, and that is where I wish to go.” In another account, he is asked just before his death whether he would like to go to bed and replies, “Certainly not. I have always proposed to die dressed and sitting in my chair.” The Massachusetts legislature is adjourned and ships in the harbor fly their flags at half mast on the day of his funeral at the Federal Street Church, January 14, 1854.
