Suffragist demonstration is held outside the State House.
February 25, 1919
Members of the National Woman’s Party picket in front of the reviewing stand outside the State House set up for a parade honoring President Woodrow Wilson on his return from the Paris Peace Conference ending World War I. Despite Wilson’ support for the right of women to vote, some members of the NWP did not think he was doing enough to make it a reality. Nineteen of the demonstrators are arrested, and subsequently jailed at the Woman’s Detention Center in the basement of the courthouse in Pemberton Square. A demonstration is held to protest the arrests is held later that day. One woman’s case is dismissed, another is acquitted. The rest are convicted. Four pay a five-dollar fine and thirteen receive eight-day sentences in the Charles Street Jail.
