The Fours opens.

1976

Operated by Peter Colton and his family since 1980, it is located at 166 Canal Street. It soon becomes one of the most popular sports bars in the city, not only with fans, but with athletes as well. Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy later writes, “With all due respect to the Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon Street, The Fours was the true Cheers Bar of Boston. It’s where everybody knew your name and knew enough to leave you alone if your name was Larry Bird or Bobby Orr.” Other Fours bars subsequently open, but the original closes on August 30, 2020.
