Taylor (Robert R.) is born in Wilmington, North Carolina.

June 8, 1868

Robert Taylor learns construction from his father, a former slave, and moves to Boston in 1888. He lives initially at 62 Phillips Street, then at 63 Fayette Street and 367 Northampton Street. Taylor becomes the first African-American graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture in 1892,* and then a professor at today’s Tuskegee University. He dies in Tuskegee, Alabama, on December 13, 1942. A stamp in his honor is issued on May 13, 2015.
