Sumner (William E.) Tunnel is dedicated.

Originally the East Boston Traffic Tunnel, the Sumner Tunnel is subsequently named for the major developer of East Boston and connects downtown Boston to East Boston at Maverick Square. Construction began on March 4, 1931. The first automobile tunnel in Massachusetts, it opens to traffic on July 2, 1934. Initially a two-way, free tunnel, it is made one-way after the opening of a second tunnel in 1961.* Tolls are charged beginning in 1983.
