Stride Rite Corporation is established.
1919
Originally the Green Shoe Manufacturing Company, it is founded by Phillip Green and Jacob Slosberg and located initially in a stable in Roxbury. The company builds a new plant at 960 Harrison Avenue in the 1920s and becomes one of the leading manufacturers of leisure shoes in the U.S. It adopts its current name in 1966 and opens the first company-run day care center for employees and community residents in 1971, and moves its headquarters to Cambridge in 1983.
