Storrow Drive opens.

June 16, 1951

Named for James Jackson Jr. and Helen Storrow, it runs along the Charles River from Charlesgate to Leverett Circle. Although first proposed in the 1920s, a $1 million donation by Mrs. Storrow for creation of the Esplanade in March 1929 was accepted with the understanding that the highway would not be built. After her death in 1944, however, construction of the highway was approved by a single vote in the Massachusetts legislature in 1949. The road is widened in 1954 and 1955. Construction of low bridges over the parkway – and then trucks getting stuck under them – subsequently leads to use of the term “Storrowed” to describe such incidents.
