Stearns (R.H.) & Company is established.

[1848-Shannon] Founded by Richard H. Stearns, the department store opens initially on Washington Street. It subsequently specializes in women’s clothing and moves to new building (first) on Tremont Street in 1886,* then to another (second) on the same site in 1909.* The store closes in July 1977.
