St. Mary’s Church is dedicated.

1851

The building is located at the corner of Endicott Street and Cooper Street.  The first Catholic church in the North End, it initially met in a Methodist church in 1835. Built to serve the neighborhood’s growing Irish immigrant population, a boys school is established by the Jesuits and a girls school by the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1859. The building was demolished and a larger church built on the site in 1877. The parish closes in 1973 and an apartment building is subsequently built on the site.
