Squanto (Tisquantum) arrives back on Cape Cod.

A member of a party led by Capt. Thomas Dermer, he discovers that all of the Patuxet inhabitants of his former village have died from smallpox brought on by contact with Europeans. Although Dermer goes on to Virginia, Squanto remains on Cape Cod, living first with the Wampanoags and then possibly with the Pokanoket in Rhode Island.
