Spectacle Island is re-purchased by the city of Boston.

The island is used for a garbage dump from 1912 until 1959. It is enlarged by fill taken from the “Big Dig” between 1993 and 1998 and reopens as part of the Boston Harbor Island National Park area on June 24, 2006.
