South Boston High School is placed in court receivership.
December 9, 1975
The action is taken by federal Judge W. Arthur Garrity, who also removes Dr. William Reid as headmaster. Nearly all of the white students in the school boycott classes two days later to protest the judge’s decisions. Garrity names Jerome Winegar of Minnesota headmaster on April 8, 1976. Garrity lifts the receivership in August 1978, but Winegar remains in the position until 1989.
