Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in New-England is established.

July 27, 1649

Subsequently called the New England Company, its creation was authorized by Parliament’s passage of An Act for the Promoting and Propagating of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. The first Protestant missionary organization in the world, it subsequently supports Rev. John Eliot’s attempts to bring Christianity to local tribes.
