Smallpox epidemic strikes Boston.
1730
Because doctors are now willing to resort to inoculation, the death toll is suppressed. Of the approximately 3,600 infected with the disease, nearly 500 die, but only 12 of the nearly 400 residents who agree to be inoculated die. The average annual death rate from smallpox in Boston throughout the century is approximately 37 per 1,000 residents.
