April 20, 1689
The deposed royal governor subsequently makes two unsuccessful escape attempts. In the first Andros disguises himself in women’s clothes and gets past two lines of sentinels, but a guard on the outer line notices his military boots, which he had forgotten to change. In the second, after one of his servant’s gets a guard drunk, he escapes to Rhode Island, but is recaptured and returned. Andros is finally allowed to return to England on February 5, 1690. He subsequently serves as governor of Virginia.
