Simmons (John) House is built.
1861
Architect: Bryant & Gilman. Designed in the French Academic style and built for the clothing manufacturer, it is located at 1 – 3 Arlington Street. Subsequent occupants include Bill Weld, Leonard Cutter, and Horace Baxter. 1 Arlington Street It becomes the headquarters of the Catholic Women of Boston from 1920 to 1968, the Boston School of Modern Languages, and Emerson College, and is purchased by Fisher College in 2006. 2 Arlington Street operate as a lodging house from 1912 to 1944, returns to single-family use, and is converted to condominiums in 1979. Three Arlington Street is converted to apartments in 1950 and to condominiums in 1984.
