Shurtleff v. Boston decision declares the city cannot deny groups rthe ight to fly flags on City Hall Plaza.
May 2, 2022
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court finds that the city of Boston violated the civil rights of a group called Camp Constitution led by Hal Shurtleff by refusing to fly its flag on City Hall Plaza because it included the symbol of a Christian cross. The court found that it was the only group denied such permission between 2005 and 2017 and that the use of the third flag pole on the plaza constituted private and not public speech. The group is permitted to fly its flag on City Hall Plaza on August 3, 2022.
