Short-term rental regulation is enacted.

June 13, 2018

Passed by the City Council by a vote of 11 to 2 and signed by Mayor Marty Walsh, the new regulations are the most stringent attempts in the U.S. to regulate this new industry. They prohibit investors and tenants from renting apartments by the night through websites, but allow homeowners and owner-occupants to do so as long they register their units with the city. The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2019. A threatened lawsuit challenging the regulations by industry giant Airbnb is dropped on August 29, 2019.
