Shepard Fairey is arrested in Boston.
February 6, 2009
A graffiti artist best-known for his stenciled images on the walls of buildings around the country, Fairey is arrested by Boston police on his way to the opening of an exhibition of his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Charged with defaulting on a warrant issued in 2000 for posting graffiti images at the corner of Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue, he pleads guilty to three charges of vandalism and pays a fine of $2,000 to a Back Bay neighborhood group on July 10, 2009. But he also declares, “There should be more public outlets for art.”
