Second Church in Dorchester is dedicated.

October 30, 1806

Originally the Second Parish Church and also known as the Second Congregational Church, Codman Church, and South Church, it is designed in the Federal style and located at today’s 600 Washington Street. The congregation was established by 64 members “affectionately dismissed” from the First Church, which could no longer accommodate its growing congregation in October 1806. John Codman is the first pastor and serves, despite controversy, until his death in 1847. The church bell, by the Paul Revere Company, is installed in 1816. A new clock, donated by Walter Baker, is installed in the bell tower in 1852. The building is enlarged in 1869 and is today the oldest, active Congregational meeting house in Boston. The building is renovated with the support of Historic Boston, Inc. in 2013.
