Seasholes, Nancy S. Gaining Ground: A History of Landmaking in Boston.

2003

Cambridge, MA: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, 2003. The book is the most complete and authoritative account of the expansion of the city through the addition of made land. According to Seasholes, “Boston probably has more made land than any other city in North America.” She calculates that of the roughly 47 square miles and 30,000 acres that make up the city (not counting the Harbor Islands), some 5,250 acres – approximately one-sixth are made land, including 500 acres added to the original 487-acre Shawmut Peninsula.
