Scigliano (George) is born in the North End.

August 26, 1874

The son of Italian immigrants, George Scigliano graduates from the Boston University School of Law, and becomes head of a neighborhood vigilance committee that resists La Camora or Black Hand, the Neapolitan criminal organization that preceded the Mafia. He lives at 232 Hanover Street, and serves on the Boston Common Council (1901-03) and in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1904-06). Scigliano is credited with helping to reform labor and banking conditions for Italian immigrants. He dies in Millbury on June 17, 1906. His funeral at St. Leonard’s Church on June 20, 1906, attracts thousands of mourners, and he is buried in St. John’s Cemetery in Worcester.
