Cpl. Samuel Finkle is reported killed in action in France.

September 5, 1918

Originally reported missing in action, Finkle, a member of the 328th Infantry Regiment, was shot and his body dragged away by German soldiers in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in World War II.  Originally declared missing, his body is later recovered. The city of Boston approves the Hero Square for the West End resident at the corner of Chambers Street and Poplar Street on November 7, 1921. After the West End urban renewal project erased that spot from the map, the city re-erected Finkel’s Hero Square at the corner of Cambridge and Joy Streets where it still stands today.
