Ruth (Babe) is born in Baltimore.

Born George Herman Ruth and the son of George and Katherine Ruth, Babe Ruth grows up in the St. Mary’s Industrial School orphanage, shows an aptitude for baseball ,and is acquired by the Boston Red Sox along with pitcher Ernie Shore in a trade in 1914.* Used primarily as a pitcher by the Red Sox, he is sold to the New York Yankees in 1919,* and becomes the greatest home run hitter in major league history up to that time and one of the best-known athletes in the world. Ruth returns to Boston briefly to play for the Boston Braves in 1935.* He dies in New York City on August 16, 1948.
