April 17, 1975
The son of Lee and Brenda Roy, Travis Roy grows up in North Yarmouth, attends Boston University, and is injured and left paralyzed in his first collegiate hockey game in 1995.* Roy undergoes physical therapy, subsequently graduates from Boston University, and spends the rest of his life working for those suffering from paralysis, starting a foundation that raises more than $20 million for the cause. He dies in Vermont from complications from his condition on October 29, 2020. A day later, former B.U. hockey coach Jack Parker declares, “He did more for people in his 25 years in a wheelchair than if he’d been a 20-year NHLer.”
