Roslindale is named.
March 15, 1870
The local post office, previously called South Street Crossing, is renamed Roslindale. According to one account, the name is suggested by John Pierce, an Englishman, who claims the area resembles the picturesque town of Roslyn, Scotland. According to another source, the name comes from a Scotsman named Laurie, who had lived in Roslyn, Scotland, and after emigrating to Boston, built a house on Florence Street that he called Roslyn Cottage. According to a third source, the name is a derivative of “Roseland,” after the rose gardens in the area.
