Roslindale becomes part of the new town of West Roxbury.

May 24, 1851

Massachusetts legislature approves the creation of the town of West Roxbury, which also includes Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. The movement to separate from Roxbury was led by Arthur Austin. One of the reasons for the secession is the fear by some residents that those in the more urban Roxbury were about to approve annexation to Boston, and those in the more rural and middle class areas of today’s Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, and West Roxbury did not want to be part of the city that was becoming populated more and more by poor and working class immigrants.
