Ritz-Carlton Hotel opens.
May 18, 1927
Architect: Strickland, Blodgett & Lane. Designed in the Art Deco styles and an exception n to the Back Bay height limit, it is located at 15 Arlington Street. A lavish opening-night party prompts the Boston Globe to describe its atmosphere as “elegance rather than splendor.” Guests, whose reservations must be initially approved by owner Edward Wyner, subsequently include the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Winston Churchill, Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh, famous actors, composers, and playwrights who re-write their works being tried out in Boston. The hotel becomes known for its quality service, strict dress code, cozy bar, and sunlit cafĂ©. An addition is built in 1981.* The hotel is purchased by Indian Hotels, Company, Ltd. and renamed the Taj Boston in 2007. It is purchased by a local investment group, renovated, and reopens as The Newbury at 1 Newbury Street in 2021.
