Cushing is installed by Pope John XXIII in a ceremony at the Vatican in Rome, 14 years after being named archbishop of Boston. Some attribute the delay in his appointment to the desire by New York’s Cardinal Francis Spellman to remain the unchallenged voice for the American Catholic Church.
