Rep. Salvatore DiMasi is elected speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

The first Italian-American elected speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, DiMasi (D) represents the North End. He resigns in January 2009, and is indicted on June 2, 2009 of using his influence to steer state contracts to a computer software company. DiMasi is convicted in 2011.*
