Regular mail service between Boston and New York begins.

January 6, 1786

Federal government awards a contract to the stagecoach service operated by Levi Pease to carry mail three or four times a week between the two cities. The mail service ceases in 1788, resumes in 1789, and is increased to six times a week by 1792.
