Readville Race Track opens.
August 25, 1896
Originally the Readville Trotting Park, it is located in the Stony Brook Reservation. It consists of a one-mile oval track built for harness racing and a grandstand that seats some 3,000. The first two-minute mile by a pacer in the U.S. is run here in 1897, and the first two-minute mile by a trotter in 1903. The first auto races are held in 1903* and the first motorcycle races in 1914. The premiere harness racing track in New England trough the 1920s, it is resurfaced and banked, using fill from the new Sumner Tunnel, and converted exclusively to auto racing in 1932. It closes on May 31, 1937 and is later demolished. The site is currently used for warehouses.
