Provincial Congress (first) is established in Salem

October 7, 1774

The temporary successor to the General Court, it subsequently meets in Concord and Cambridge. The body declares the Charter of 1691 resumed, the office of governor, lieutenant governor and Council vacant, and its authority to operate Massachusetts government, and establishment of a militia. The body is dissolved in July 1775.*
