Prohibition ends in the United States.
December 5, 1933
Utah becomes the 36th state to ratify the Twenty-First Amendment, which repeals the Eighteenth Amendment, ending all restrictions on the sale of alcohol to adults. In Boston, the celebration that follows is said to rival the one that occurred with the end of World War I. The first three restaurants that are subsequently granted new liquor licenses in the city are the Copley Plaza, Jacob Wirth’s, and Joe & Nemo’s.
