Powers of the colony’s chief executives is defined by the General Court.

Upset at the powers granted to the governor’s office and at the continued frictions with John Winthrop, Thomas Dudley resigns as deputy governor. His resignation is not accepted, however. In an attempt to smooth out the differences between the two men, the court votes to meet twice a year in Boston and twice a year in Cambridge for the next several years.
