Portland Gale strikes Boston.
November 26, 1898
(to 11/27) The two-day storm is named for the paddle wheel steamship Portland, which after leaving Boston Harbor sank off Cape Ann on November 27, 1989. All of the some 250 aboard, including 63 crew members (most of them African-American) drown in the worst New England maritime disaster in history. The wreck of the ship is not discovered by sonar until 2002, and by divers until 2008.
