Phil Ochs records “The Ballad of William Worthy.”
1964
A song on Ochs’ album All the News That’s Fit to Print, it recounts the Boston-born journalist’s run-in with the U.S. State Department over his visit to Cuba. Lyrics include, “William Worthy isn’t worthy to enter our door. / He went down to Cuba, he’s not American anymore. / But somehow it’s strange to hear the State Department say, / You are living in the free world, in the free world you must stay.”
