Perkins (Thomas Handasyd) House is built.
1833
Designed in the Greek Revival style, It is located at today’s 30 Temple Place (then 12 Temple Place). The building is flanked by houses built for Perkins’ daughters, Mary Ann Cary and Caroline Gardiner. Describing the furnishings and artwork in Perkins’ home, Parson Pierce later recalls a remark of Samuel Johnson, “Ah! these are the things, that make us unwilling to die!” But Pierce questions “whether there might be too many naked beauties for the contemplation of the young.” After Perkins’ death, the building becomes headquarters for Provident Institution for Savings 1856. The building is renovated by James Purdon in 1933 and is today the headquarters of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc.
