April 9, 2009

The first partial face transplant in Boston and the second in history, it is performed by Dr. Bodham Pomahac and a team of seven others during a 17-hour procedure at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The patient, James Maki, had his face disfigured when he fell on the electrified third rail at the Ruggles Station on the Orange Line. The first partial face transplant in the U.S. was performed at the Cleveland Clinic in 2008.
