Old Howard Theatre opens.

Formerly the Howard Athenaeum, the venue begins to host vaudeville and then burlesque. Performers include Abbott and Costello, Fred Allen, W.C. Fields, Al Jolson, Buster Keaton, and Bert Lahr. By 1900, it turns to burlesque. Performer include Ann Corio, Sally Keith, and Sally Rand. Patrons include Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (who notes, “Thank God I’m a man of low taste.” Its advertisements boast, “There is Always Something Doing at the Old Howard.” The theater is closed briefly in 1953,* damaged by a fire, closes for good in 1961 and is demolished in 1962.
