Occupy Boston demonstration begins.
September 30, 2011
Several hundred people, mostly college students, set up tents and begin camping on the Rose Kennedy Greenway near 600 Atlantic Avenue. An outgrowth of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which began in New York City on September 17, 2011, the demonstration is held to protest unfair financial practices and income inequality. Similar “Occupy” demonstrations are subsequently held in various U.S. cities, but the one in Boston lasts the longest. It ends when Boston police arrest 46 demonstrators and evict the rest at 5 a.m. on December 10, 2011.
