Norumbega Park opens in Newton.

June 17, 1897

Architect: Samuel Brown. Built and operated by the Commonwealth Avenue Street Railway, it is located on the Charles River near the stone tower built to commemorate the alleged arrival of the Vikings to the Boston area. It includes an amusement park, casino, zoo, and a large outdoor Great Steel Theatre, the largest in New England at the time, which is later converted to the Totem Pole Ballroom. Served by the streetcar line from January 17, 1903, until November 1, 1914, the park closes in 1963. The ballroom closes on February 8, 1964, and is destroyed by a fire in 1965. The property is subsequently cleared, and most of the site is now occupied up by a Marriott Hotel.
