Northeastern University is established.

1896

An outgrowth of the Boston YMCA’s Evening Institute for Young Men, it is located initially at 462 Boylston Street. Frank Palmer Speare is the first president. Classes begin in 1897 and a day college is established in 1909. The first university in the U.S. to adopt the work-study Cooperative Plan of Education, the school moves to the current YMCA building on Huntington Avenue in 1912, is incorporated as Northeastern College of the Boston YMCA in 1916, becomes Northeastern University of the Boston YMCA in 1922, and Northeastern University in 1935, It moves to its current location on Huntington Avenue in 1938,* and formally separates from the YMCA in 1944.
